About the Friends of the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center

Our Mission and Purpose

To sustain, enhance, and promote the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center as an outdoor education camp for youth and adult groups and as a public park, compatible with the environmental setting and the unique history of the site.

We are a Michigan non-profit corporation and have been granted 501(c)3 tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service.

About the Friends of the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center

In 2003, a critical time in its history, a group of concerned and motivated residents came together to advocate for the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center.  In 2017, they formally organized as a Michigan non-profit organization, and the Friends of the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center was born.

Since the incorporation, the Friends, in cooperation with Presque Isle County, have sponsored numerous grant projects for camp improvements, including repair of the mess hall walls and flooring, addition of a washer / dryer and half bath, replacement of commercial stoves, addition of interior furnishings, and structural and roof repair for the original camp garage.  They also organize annual clean-up days, initiate public education and outreach activities to promote the center. They recently authored a successful National Register nomination for the camp and created a New Deal trail booklet that features the camp and its CCC-era history.
